The Continent’s Football Union leaders have gathered in Morocco’s resort city of Rabat to chart the way forward for players at a two Day FIFPRO Africa Division Annual General Meeting with a renew call for commitment towards serving the footballer.
In his remarks at the opening of the high level meeting of football Unions in Africa, FIFPRO Africa Division President Geremie Njitap urged the leaders to place serving the player at the core of their operations and remain relevant in striving for improved conditions in the sport. He called for unity among the unions to strengthen the players’ voice as there would be no football without the footballer. He said Unions needed to work closely with players and address their challenges including their conditions under which they worked. And FIFPRO Global acting general secretary Stephane Burchkalter advised the Unions to be partners and not pressure groups in their quest to serve the footballers in their countries. He said stakeholders needed to see the Unions as partners and not obstacles which could be achieved through the increased engagement with stakeholders in football at all levels. He also hailed Morocco for being trail blazers and setting a great example in terms of the Union’s contribution and partnership in the development of football in the country.
During the opening, FIFPRO African Division leaders observed a moment of silence in memory of players that had died during the 2023 to 2024 season among them Zambia’s former international Justin Shonga, Copper Queens and Indeni Roses player, Noria Betani and Nakonde Town Council FC player Collard Mulenga.
